I was updating the firmware on kies for my galaxy s and it got half way through and then said error and is no frozen on the downloading 'do not turn off' screen, I have taken out the battery and put it back in, and tried the hard reset, which leads me to a phone symbol, a computer symbol and an error symbol in the middle, help plzzzzzz

Do not turn off target.' In earlier models such as Galaxy S3/S4/Note 4, the 'downloading' screen is black with a Android logo while in newer models like Galaxy S6/S7/S8/S8 Plus/S9 running on Mashmallow and above, the 'Downloading' screen is blue with a download icon.

I had the same problem (except I didn't use Kies, I had the problem after the first OTA Update)

Here are the steps I did to get my device back in a usable state:

Keep in mind, this will revert your phone to a rather old (android 2.1) version of TouchWiz. You may want to see if there are newer ODIN files available.

Also, I take no responsibility if this does not work for you, or your phone explodes in the process. These are the steps I took, and they worked for me. Good Luck.

1. • Note that all 3 of those are from the same thread. It also wouldn't hurt for your to read that post too.

2. Open Odin, plug in your phone, then put it into download mode.

   • To expand on this because a lot of people were asking 'how to put in download mode'. The easiest way I found to actually do it, if you can can connect via ADB is to do the following:

   # reboot download

   If you can't get that to work, try how i mention below (phone off, battery out, hold vol+ & vol-), or try searching these forums for 'vibrant download mode' you will find other things that 'work' for people

3. load the PIT file in appropriate area.

4. load the .tar file in the PDA area.
5. DO NOT check 're-partition'.

6. Click start, let it finish.

   • At this point ODIN failed on me. and I got the 'mobile-!-pc' image.

7. Now, pull your battery and unplug USB

8. I also took out the SIM and sdcard at this point.

9. bring the phone to download mode again

   1. plug the USB back in (the phone should be off)
   2. Hold down vol+ & vol-
   3. Put battery back in
   4. press power

10. re-run ODIN as mentioned above

Don't give up if this doesn't work. If you get the device to boot, even if it is to the 'Error Screen', there is a possibility of recovering.

You should experiment with rebooting via the various key combinations / battery pulls / USB plugged-in-ness below first. Sometimes the phone can be jolted out of the bad mode it's in by doing that. If the firmware was partially written though, you'll have to do Odin as Ryan suggests.

I basically agree with Ryan's answer, but I'd use at least Odin 1.5. Here's Odin 1.7, it includes the 512 PIT file.

For the GT-i9000 (international Galaxy S), get firmware from this XDA thread. You probably want the newest for your region (excluding Gingerbread, since it hasn't been officially released).

I also recommend checking re-partition in Odin. This will wipe 100% of your data, however.

I think the easiest way to get into Download Mode is through key combinations. For the i9000, just hold Power + VolDown + Home until the phone reboots, then let go of Power only; after a second you'll get to a yellow triangle with an Android in it. For the Vibrant, remove the battery, plug into USB, hold VolDown + VolUp, and insert the battery.

As a curious newbie I went into downloading mode in my Samsung Galaxy S3 by pressing Vol down+center Home+power button. After that I got options to press Vol up key to continue and Vol down key to cancel. Out of sheer curiosity and thinking I can exit anytime I pressed Vol up key and the very infamous 'downloading do not turn off' screen sits with the green Android logo.

All this was done without any cable attached to my computer since I don't want to root or flash my ROM. I just was curious as to what happens next. Now the screen just waited for Odin to connect, however I did not since after connecting I am unsure if there is no direct exit option from Odin without flashing ROM and not doing anything (in other words a simple exit from Odin with no rooting and no flashing and nothing happens).

Next I tried to go into recovery mode and tried all combinations of keys to exit this 'downloading' mode but I failed. The power naturally went down as I was reading through many help articles and I put in another battery and now the phone doesn't turn on at all now; there is no reaction and it does not go into recovery mode either. Now I am in a soup as I want my photos and messages to be recovered (no external SD storage used)

I wish to know:

1. If I do manage to go into recovery mode, then selecting option 'reboot system now' will simply reboot my system and phone will work?

2. If this does not work then does recovery mode option, 'wipe cache partition' delete all user photos and messages? (I am absolutely sure factory reset option does delete all user data.)

3. If my phone waits on 'downloading don't turn off target screen', then how do I simply exit this mode? Should I connect to Odin (highly risky) and exit? (I don't know what will happen.) Does connecting to Odin necessarily mean that I have to flash my ROM?

I enquired and found some answers to this problem.

1) If you press the exit button in the recovery menu, the phone will reboot and regular app screen should be seen.

2) as answered earlier wipe cache does not delete user data, (only system cache files are deleted)

3) to exit the download mode (when not flashing anything to the device) is to either pull the battery or long press the power button (which simulates a battery pull).

Anyways what I did was take the device to support center and they told that IC power chip needs to be changed and was charged abt 27$ or so. No data was deleted at all.

Not in all the Samsung phones you have to press the same buttons to start in safe mode, some combinations of button can take you to other places, depending the phone model (like it happened with me).

Check how to start in safe mode for your specific phone model (just Google it). Once inside you have to:

1. wipe data / yes
2. wipe cache
3. reboot
4. wait for a couple of minutes

You have two options :- Hold volume up + power or just hold the power button. It depends on your device that which method will get you out.

wipe cache won't delete user data at all.

a factory reset will preserve your photos, but not your messages... though they still might be retrievable.
